The new year means New Year’s Resolutions. Who actually makes a resolution anymore? We all know that we won’t be able to keep them.
But we are still supposed to hope that we can make a resolution and keep it. We are supposed to make improvements in our lives. Even Oprah has gotten in on it again, signing on with Weight Watchers and pushing us all to make 2016 “The Year of My Best Body.”
These resolutions are supposed to make our lives better, but making our lives better also means that they aren’t good enough. But what if a resolution isn’t about changing our lives from bad to good, but defining something that already is? Something we already want to do but have been too distracted to fulfill?
A friend of mine makes a sort-of resolution each year. Nothing huge like shedding 150 pounds or spending less, but rather making a small change in her habits. A small change that doesn’t say that her life isn’t good enough, but rather acknowledging that life gets busy. These small changes are things like flossing regularly, avoiding fast food restaurants, and taking coffee from home instead of stopping on the way to work.
These small changes are reasonable and doable. Things that make sense, aren’t too hard, and ways to bring us back to center. To help our lives find balance.
As the tag line of this blog states, I try to live deliberately and spiritually in a world of distraction. But I often forget to do this.
The distraction in my life builds up so that I fall into a life of reaction. I react to the things around me – to the needs, to the surprises, to the busy schedules. We try to plan things out, but hockey games are added, work trips scheduled, or needs arise in other places. I walk around the house trying to ignore the wreckage of our kids’ “creativity” and the long to-do lists.
I get overwhelmed by the distractions of life, all the details that fill my calendar and set off the scheduled alarms on my phone. But I also choose to delay working on the to-do lists in order to find moments to live deliberately and spiritually.
I make time for small DIY projects to bring a bit of creativity in my life. Even adding needle felting to my crafting skills after picking up a small kit from Crafty Planet.
These small projects keep my hands and mind busy, helping me to limit my thinking. I have a bad habit of thinking too much sometimes, planning and devising and exploring ideas or situations. My thoughts become distractions in themselves.
So my small change to life for 2016? Ensure that I am regularly working on a project, even if small (like making the skate guards I will share here next week). This small change requires that I keep my craft area clean, which honestly won’t be easy – but a small change in and of itself.
This isn’t a resolution, but a small deliberate step to bring balance in a world of chaos. A small step that won’t drastically change my life…but a small step that will help me stay centered. A small step that will help me remain sane and available for my children, my husband, and others around me.
