These are three simple sentences. You are Loved. You are Good. You are a Blessing.
But as the saying goes, sometimes this simplest things are the hardest.
Many, if not most, of us are walking around this world with an empty heart and soul. Empty because we do not feel loved, we carry a long list of reasons why we are not good, and we do not see there is any possibility we can be a blessing.
You are Loved. God created us to love and be loved. Yet love isn’t easy to define or identify, it is something we feel. But we can be deluded into thinking that something else is love, or at least is a good substitute. Often we settle with being wanted. But being wanted requires that we have something to give, something that the other wants. It makes us into a commodity that can be bought, used, and discarded. But God’s love isn’t about us…it is about God. God’s doesn’t love us because God expects something from us, but loves us just because. God already loves you, has always loved you, and will always love you…all you need to do is open your heart just a tiny bit and receive that love.
You are Good. Our society constantly tells us that we are only good if we meet certain standards. Are you trying to feel “good”? When will you finally be able to say you have made it, that you are worthy that you are acceptable? The thing is, that you are already there. When you woke up this morning, you were already good. When you did that regrettable thing last week, you were already good. When you didn’t make someone happy last month, you were already good. God is the one who determines who is good or not. God is the ultimate and only judge, as only God knows everything. God knows us better than we know ourselves, so we can only look to God to know if we are “acceptable”. And God has deemed you acceptable. Even more than that, God has deemed you good, because God made you good – and nothing, even our own ignorance or denial, can change that.
You are a Blessing. One of our deepest needs is to find meaning. Our capitalist society has exploited this intrinsic human impulse by using it to create workers and consumers. We end up seeing ourselves only useful to others, only having meaning if we can produce things that are needed or make money, and we have only really “made it” if we have enough money to buy everything we can dream of. A quick glance at who gets paid what, and what jobs are regarded as “successful” But this is not what God intended. Our need to find meaning is intended to help us seek out God, to lead us to the realization that we are, have always been and always will be a blessing to God. You are a blessing because you exist. And as a blessing, God uses you in ways you know and don’t know, to be a blessing to others.
The wonderful thing about all this? About being Loved by God, by being Good and being a Blessing, is that if we embrace these three things, if we break down the walls that have been built around our hearts and spirits, is that we will live in a world of abundance where God’s Love dominates all.
Sure, a bad day, a bad situation, a misfiring of neurons can and will set us slightly off track, but God’s Love will always prevail, bringing our heart, our spirit, our lives back to center, back to the right path.
We do not need to live as if we are empty. We do not always need to search for something more or better. We do not need to live in the shame of not being enough, not being “right”, not being worthy. As the emptiness we feel is of our own making. God is ready to fill it, we just need to open our hearts and spirits a tiny bit.
Gracious God. There are many of Your children, Your beloved, who feel lost. They have their sights on worldly standards which can never fill our hearts and spirits. We hold on tight to the belief that we are only loved if we have something to give that others want, that we are good only if what we do and think is perfect, and that we have meaning only if we have material goods or achievements to prove our existence. Yet You already Love us, You already have called us Good, and You have already established us as a Blessing. Lord, open our spirits so that we may embrace the Truth that can only be seen through Your eyes. Open our hearts so that we can fill this emptiness not with temporary fillers which push back the hunger, but with Your Love which is forever satisfying. Amen.
