Written in prayer for all those accompanying a loved one through hospice.
Waiting for the love of your life to take their last breath.
Waiting for the quiet sleep to slip into silence.
Waiting for the moment to come, for the knowledge to be reality.
He asks for nothing, just time. Yet there is not much more of that.
Holding onto minutes and seconds.
Watching the clock for when she wakes next.
He knows her every move, every need, yet can do nothing.
Only in God do I find rest; my salvation comes from him.
Only God is my rock and my salvation – my stronghold! I won’t be shaken.
My deliverance and glory depend on God. God is my strong rock. My refuge is in God.
(Psalm 62:5-7, CEB)
In those moments that stretch out, that we hold onto hoping that they can exist forever, we are not alone.
In God we can find rest. We can find refuge. We can find peace.
In God we find someone who has always been waiting, waiting for our return. And at moments like this, we can be assured, that we are not alone in our waiting.
Lord, be with this family and all those others who are waiting for the last moments of their loved ones. May those moments be full of love and hope, as one day they will be reunited in Your presence. Amen.
