Let Your God Love You

If we are open to God’s call, open to God determining our path, sometimes strange things happen.

Lately, there has been a strong mix of sorrow and joy, abuse and redemption, loss and love.

I wonder, if in the middle of so many of these stories, is that we can not always allow God to love us.

At times, we feel so damaged, so messed up, so broken, so imperfect, that we can not see how anyone can love us – and in many of these cases, we have been told by others that we are not lovable.

We wonder if we should be loved at all.  We can’t even love ourselves.

Yet, if we can let God love us, we can begin to see our value.  We need to trust in God and fully accept that God made us, blessed us, and saw we were good (Genesis 1).  We need to trust in God that if he knows us better than we know ourselves, and still loves us, then, well, aren’t we loved?

Once we know God loves us, truly loves us, despite and because of who he created us as and to be, then the sorrow becomes joy, abuse becomes redemption, and loss becomes love.

Yet going down that path is difficult.  When we are so lost in the place absent of love, it is difficult, if not impossible, to even begin to imagine what it is to be loved.  We need to take a first step.

Allowing God to love us is a safe first step, as God’s promise is unending.

In this vein, here is a prayer from Edwina Gateley that I know has helped others be open to God’s love:

Let Your God Love You

Be silent.
Be still.
Before your God.

Say nothing.
Ask nothing.
Be silent.
Be still.

Let your God
Look upon you.
That is all.

God knows.
God understands.
God loves you
With an enormous love,
And only wants
To look upon you
With that love.

Let your God –
Love you.
