We actually had Spring for Easter this year!!! Normally I am not in the mood with the continuing cold, but this time it is different. With no snow, flowers blooming, and allergies getting the best of us, I actually felt in the mood! We created an Easter tree by hanging plastic colored Easter eggs from one of our front-yard trees. I then got crafty by making a simple garland from various colors of felt cut into egg shapes and glued them on a ribbon. They are small gestures, but add a little whimsy to our days.
Another small gesture I’ve taken to add some excitement is to finally take a writing class from the Loft. I am learning a lot and know I will be a better writer for it (if I can only eliminate typos caused by being distracted by pint size humans). Yet, the most important part of the class is getting to know the other students, their stories, and their insights. These six 2 hour classes are adding whimsy, but also added depth, to my life.
While a little more complicated than hanging eggs on branches and taking scissors to felt, it was time to do something different. I overcame, or rather didn’t think about, my hesitations regarding taking time for myself and spending money on something not physically tangible (or retirement savings, seminary loan). The eggs added color to my life, and the stories of these new people did too. I would have missed out had I spent another Lent buried in snow or another season putting off something I’ve really wanted to do.
God, Thank you for the unexpected in our lives and the opportunities to do those things we keep putting off. Amen.
