Knocking out the Dark

A Minnesota Public Radio commentary once included a story of a young Martin Luther King, Jr.  who looked out his window and watched a man light the street lights every night.  When his mother asked what he was doing, he said he was watching a man knocking out the dark.

Who are we in this story?  Are we the boy, the mother or the man lighting the street lights?  Are we open to seeing God’s grace, open to love and change?  Are we a step away from the light, needing someone to show it to us?  Or are we the one knocking out the dark for someone else?  Have you taken on a different role at different times in your life?

It is amazing how in one day I can be in the role the boy, the mother and the man.  Realizing that the Holy Spirit is working through me, in front of me, or in someone else’s life is always amazing.  May it be amazing for you too.
